D2 Steel: The Standard
Carbon: 1.5%, Chromium: 11.5%, Molybdenum: 0.8%, Vanadium: 0.9%
D2 is widely considered the best balance for most knife applications. Excellent edge retention, relatively easy to sharpen, semi-stainless (won’t rust in normal conditions). The go-to choice for production hunting knives. Used in most HM Knives designs when performance is the priority.
J2 Steel: Japanese Carbon
Carbon: 1.1%, Chromium: 0.3%, Pure carbon focus
Traditional Japanese steel emphasizing edge over everything else. Takes incredibly sharp edges, easy to sharpen, but requires diligent maintenance (will rust). Kitchen knives and Damascus layers often use J2.
O1 Steel: Oil-Hardening Carbon
Carbon: 0.95%, Chromium: 0.5%
Excellent for woodworking and outdoor knives. Takes a good edge, easier to sharpen than D2, but less corrosion resistant. Good middle ground between extreme carbon and stainless.
